Citizenship and Naturalization

Apply for Canadian citizenship

Canadian citizenship is automatically obtained either by being born in Canada or by descent where at least one of your parents is a first-generation Canadian. However, for permanent residences who are interested in becoming citizens, they must be able to demonstrate that they:

  • be a permanent resident;
  • have lived in Canada for three out of the last five years;
  • have filed their taxes;
  • have passed the citizenship test and interview;
  • meet the language requirements.

The current processing time for these applications according to the IRCC is 12 months.
